Classroom Word Search

This classroom puzzle fills the room itself: the desk and chair, the chalkboard and bulletin board, the projector, globe and flag, the seating chart and attendance, and the hall pass by the door.

The large classroom blackboard is usually credited to James Pillans, a teacher in Edinburgh, who joined pieces of slate into one big board around 1800 so he could teach geography to the whole class at once. Before that, each student worked on a small slate. By the middle of the 1800s most American schoolrooms had a board across the front wall.

The Pledge of Allegiance, said facing the flag in many classrooms each morning, was written by Francis Bellamy for a national school celebration of Columbus Day in 1892. The words under God were added in 1954. In 1943 the Supreme Court ruled in West Virginia v. Barnette that public schools cannot force students to say it.
