Library Word Search

This library puzzle walks through the building: the librarian and the library card, the catalog, the call number and the Dewey Decimal system, the nonfiction and reference shelves, the atlas and almanac, and the due date inside the cover.

Melvil Dewey published his Decimal Classification in 1876, while working in the Amherst College library. It sorts all knowledge into ten classes by number: the 500s hold natural science and math, the 600s technology, and the 900s history and geography. Before that, a book usually had a fixed spot on one particular shelf, and new books went wherever there was room.

Benjamin Franklin and his friends started the Library Company of Philadelphia in 1731, pooling their money to buy books they could all borrow. Free public libraries spread later, helped by the steel maker Andrew Carnegie, who paid for more than 1,600 library buildings in the United States between 1883 and 1919. Hundreds of them still lend books today.
