Santa Word Search
Forty words for the man in the red suit: his North Pole workshop and the elves who make the toys, the sleigh and Rudolph, the chimney and the stocking, cookies and milk left out on Christmas Eve, and the list of who has been naughty or nice.
He began as Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century bishop of Myra in what is now Turkey, remembered for secretly giving gold so three poor sisters could marry. Dutch settlers brought Sinterklaas to New York, and the name drifted into Santa Claus. The 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas gave him a sleigh, eight tiny reindeer and a landing on the roof, and the cartoonist Thomas Nast drew him in the 1860s with a workshop at the North Pole.
Britain had its own Father Christmas, who merged with Santa over the 1800s, and Kris Kringle comes from Christkindl, the Christ child who brings gifts in parts of Germany. Rudolph was written in 1939 for a Montgomery Ward booklet. Since 1955 NORAD has tracked Santa on radar every Christmas Eve, a tradition that began when a newspaper ad printed the wrong phone number and children called the air defense command.
