Elves come from the folklore of northern Europe, where they were small, clever and sometimes dangerous. They became Santa's toymakers in nineteenth-century America: Louisa May Alcott wrote a story about Christmas elves in the 1850s, and an 1873 magazine cover showed them at work. In the 1964 Rudolph special, Hermey the elf would rather be a dentist than make toys.
Since 2005 many families have had a scout elf from The Elf on the Shelf, a book by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. The elf flies back to Santa each night to report and turns up somewhere new every morning, often in the middle of some mischief, and the one rule is that nobody may touch it. In the 2003 film Elf, Buddy eats his spaghetti with maple syrup.
