The Elf on the Shelf began as a family custom in Carol Aebersold's home. In 2005 she and her daughter Chanda Bell wrote it down as a rhyming picture book and published it themselves, packed in a box with a small elf. The book sets out the rules: the family gives the elf a name, the elf flies back to the North Pole every night to tell Santa who has been naughty or nice, and it lands in a new spot before the children wake up.
Nobody may touch the elf, or it may lose its magic; it can listen, but it cannot speak, and on Christmas Eve it goes home with Santa until the next year. The book grew into an animated TV special on CBS in 2011, a balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and Elf Pets, a reindeer, a Saint Bernard and an arctic fox. Parents swap ideas for poses: the zip line across the kitchen, a snow angel in flour, the toilet paper wound around the tree.
