Christmas Carols Word Search

Most carols in this grid are older than the songs around them on the radio. Silent Night was first sung in 1818 in a village church in Austria, with a guitar because, the story goes, the organ was broken. The partridge, the turtle doves and the five golden rings come from a counting song first printed in London in 1780.

Wassail is the oldest word here. It comes from an Old English toast meaning be well, and wassailers went door to door singing for a cup of spiced cider long before anyone called it caroling. The carol that decks the halls with holly borrows a Welsh New Year tune; the English words were added in 1862.

The newest are American. White Christmas was written by Irving Berlin and sung by Bing Crosby in 1942, and the song about chestnuts on an open fire was written in July 1945, by two men trying to feel cool on a hot afternoon.
