Night Before Christmas Word Search
This puzzle holds forty words from the poem: not a creature stirring, the stockings by the chimney, the sugar plums, the kerchief and the cap, the clatter on the lawn, the miniature sleigh and the eight tiny reindeer, and the soot on a jolly old elf.
The poem first appeared without a name, as A Visit from St. Nicholas, in the Troy Sentinel, a newspaper in Troy, New York, on December 23, 1823. Clement Moore, a New York professor of Greek and Oriental literature, put it in a book of his poems in 1844. The family of Henry Livingston, a farmer and poet from the Hudson Valley, has long argued that he wrote it, and scholars still disagree.
The poem set most of Santa's habits: a round little man with a pipe, dimples and a nose like a cherry, a belly that shook like a bowl full of jelly, arriving on Christmas Eve rather than on December 6, the feast of Saint Nicholas, and rising up the chimney with a wink and a nod. In 1823 the last two reindeer were Dunder and Blixem, Dutch for thunder and lightning; later printings changed them to Donder and Blitzen.
