The numbering does not match the count of people, and Cleveland is why. He won in 1884, lost in 1888 and won again in 1892, and because the terms were not consecutive he is counted twice, as both the twenty-second and the twenty-fourth president. Several surnames repeat for a plainer reason: the Adamses and the Bushes are fathers and sons, the Harrisons grandfather and grandson, and the Roosevelts were fifth cousins.

Tyler settled a question the Constitution had left open. When Harrison died a month into his term in 1841, the text said the powers of the office devolved on the vice president without saying whether he became president. Tyler took the oath, moved into the house, and sent back unopened any mail addressed to the acting president. Congress grumbled and then went along, and every succession since has followed him.
