War of 1812 Word Search

This War of 1812 word search covers the war the United States fought with Britain from 1812 to 1815: impressment of American sailors, the War Hawks in Congress, Tecumseh and his confederacy, Old Ironsides, the attack on Fort McHenry and the Battle of New Orleans.

Congress declared war in June 1812, mostly over impressment, the Royal Navy's habit of taking sailors off American ships and forcing them into British service. Invading Canada went badly, but at sea the frigate USS Constitution beat HMS Guerriere in August 1812, and British shot bounced off her oak sides so often that she was nicknamed Old Ironsides. Oliver Hazard Perry won the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813.

In August 1814 British troops burned the White House and the Capitol; Dolley Madison had a portrait of George Washington taken down and carried to safety first. Weeks later Francis Scott Key watched the night bombardment of Fort McHenry at Baltimore and wrote the poem that became the national anthem. The Treaty of Ghent was signed on Christmas Eve 1814, and Andrew Jackson won at New Orleans two weeks later, before the news reached America.
