American Revolution Word Search

This American Revolution word search follows the war from the first shots at Lexington and Concord to the British surrender at Yorktown. The list holds the two sides, Patriots and Loyalists, the Redcoats and their hired Hessians, and leaders such as Lafayette and Cornwallis.

The fighting began on April 19, 1775, when British troops marched out of Boston to seize militia supplies at Concord. Paul Revere and William Dawes rode ahead the night before to warn that the regulars were coming. Most colonists were not yet asking for independence. That changed after Thomas Paine's pamphlet Common Sense appeared in January 1776 and argued that it made no sense for an island to rule a continent.

The turning point came at Saratoga in October 1777, where General John Burgoyne surrendered his whole army. The victory persuaded France to sign an alliance with the Americans in 1778, and French ships and soldiers later helped trap Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781. The Treaty of Paris, signed in 1783, ended the war and recognized the United States.
