Thirteen Colonies Word Search
This Thirteen Colonies word search names the colonies from Virginia and Massachusetts to Pennsylvania and Georgia, along with the people and trades that built them: Puritans and Quakers, tobacco planters, the cooper, the blacksmith and the merchant.
Jamestown, founded in 1607, was the first permanent English settlement, and it survived by growing tobacco. Its House of Burgesses, which first met in 1619, was the first elected assembly in English America. Massachusetts began with the Pilgrims at Plymouth in 1620 and the much larger Puritan settlement at Boston ten years later.
Teachers usually split the colonies into three regions. New England had rocky soil and lived on fishing, lumber and shipbuilding. The Middle Colonies, including New York and William Penn's Pennsylvania, grew so much wheat that they were called the breadbasket. The South grew tobacco, rice and indigo on plantations. Georgia came last, chartered in 1732 under James Oglethorpe as a buffer against Spanish Florida.
