Native American Heritage Word Search
November is Native American Heritage Month in the United States, and the Friday after Thanksgiving is Native American Heritage Day. This list names some of the more than 570 federally recognized tribes and nations, among them the Cherokee, Navajo, Lakota, Hopi and Ojibwe, and some of what their cultures gave the continent.
Sequoyah, a Cherokee silversmith, spent about twelve years creating a writing system for his language and finished it in 1821. It was so practical that within a few years thousands of Cherokee could read and write it, and a Cherokee newspaper was in print by 1828.
Corn, beans and squash were planted together by the Haudenosaunee, the Iroquois confederacy, who called them the Three Sisters: the corn gives the beans a pole to climb, the beans feed the soil, and the broad squash leaves keep the weeds down. A Navajo hogan traditionally has its doorway facing east, toward the rising sun.
