Atlas does not hold up the world. His punishment was to hold up the sky and keep it apart from the earth, which is a different job and a considerably older idea; the globe on his shoulders is a Renaissance invention. A book of maps is called an atlas because Mercator printed a picture of him in the front of one in 1595, and the name stuck to the object rather than the myth.
The sphinx changed sex and job on the way to Greece. The Egyptian one is male, a guardian, and asks nothing of anybody. The Greek one is female, winged, and sits outside Thebes killing travellers who cannot answer her riddle. Janus is the entry with the longest reach: two faces, one looking back and one forward, god of doorways and beginnings, and the month named after him still opens the year.
