This Mesopotamia word search holds forty words from the land between the Tigris and the Euphrates: Babylon and Uruk, the ziggurat, cuneiform pressed into a clay tablet, the code of Hammurabi and the epic of Gilgamesh.
Mesopotamia is Greek for between the rivers, and most of it lies in what is now Iraq. Rain there was too scarce for farming, so the Sumerians dug a canal from the river, banked it with a levee, and grew barley and dates on the watered land. By about 3200 BC the scribes of Uruk were keeping temple accounts by pressing a reed stylus into wet clay, some of the oldest writing in the world. Mesopotamians also counted in sixties, which is why an hour has sixty minutes and a circle has 360 degrees.
Hammurabi, king of Babylon around 1750 BC, had 282 laws carved on a black stone pillar that now stands in the Louvre in Paris; the best known is an eye for an eye. Ashurbanipal, an Assyrian king of the 600s BC, gathered thousands of tablets in his library at Nineveh, and among them archaeologists found the Epic of Gilgamesh, with a great flood story much like Noah's.
