Egypt lived by its river. Every summer the Nile flooded, and when the water went down it left a layer of black silt that made the fields rich. Egyptians called their country Kemet, the black land, after that soil, and split the year into three seasons around the flood. Farmers lifted water to higher fields with a shaduf, a bucket hung from a long pole with a weight on the other end.
Making a mummy took about seventy days. Embalmers removed the organs and stored them in canopic jars, but left the heart, which was weighed against a feather in the afterlife. The body was packed in natron, a natural salt, to dry it out, then wrapped in linen. For centuries no one could read hieroglyphs, until the Rosetta Stone, found in 1799, gave the same decree in Greek as well; Jean-Francois Champollion cracked the code in 1822.
