This ancient Greece word search holds forty words from the Greek city-states: Athens and Sparta, the Parthenon on the Acropolis, democracy in the assembly, Socrates and Plato, and the hoplite in his phalanx.

Athens became a democracy around 508 BC. Every male citizen could speak and vote in the Assembly, which met on a hillside called the Pnyx, but women, slaves and foreigners could not. Once a year Athenians could vote to send a too-powerful man away for ten years by scratching his name on a broken piece of pottery, an ostrakon, which gives us ostracism. Sparta went another way: boys left home at seven for military training, and the farm work was done by helots, a conquered people held in serfdom.

In 490 BC the Athenians beat a Persian army at Marathon. Ten years later Leonidas and his 300 Spartans, with a few thousand allies, held the pass at Thermopylae for three days. Greek columns come in orders still copied on banks and courthouses: plain Doric, Ionic with its scroll-shaped tops, and leafy Corinthian.
