Ancient India Word Search
This ancient India word search holds forty words from the subcontinent's first civilizations: the cities of Harappa and Mohenjo Daro on the Indus, the Vedas in Sanskrit, the Buddha under the Bodhi Tree, and the emperor Ashoka.
The Indus Valley cities, built from around 2600 BC, were laid out on grids of straight streets, with baked-brick houses, covered drains and a great public bath at Mohenjo Daro. Their people wrote in a script of short signs on stamp seals that nobody has yet deciphered. Later came the Vedas, hymns composed in Sanskrit and passed down by memory for centuries before anyone wrote them down, which hold the roots of Hinduism.
Siddhartha Gautama, a prince who gave up his palace, became the Buddha, the awakened one, about 2,500 years ago. Ashoka of the Maurya dynasty conquered Kalinga around 261 BC, was horrified by the slaughter and turned to Buddhism. He had his edicts carved on stone pillars across his empire, and the lions from the top of one at Sarnath are India's national emblem today. The digits 0 to 9 began in India too; Arab scholars carried them west, which is why Europeans called them Arabic numerals.
