This ancient China word search holds forty words from China's first empires: the Zhou, Qin and Han dynasties, the Great Wall, the Terracotta army, Confucius, oracle bones and the Silk Road.
The oldest Chinese writing is on oracle bones from about 1200 BC. Priests carved a question for the ancestors on an ox shoulder blade or a turtle shell, heated it until it cracked, and read the answer in the cracks, and many of those characters can still be recognized in Chinese writing today. The Zhou kings claimed to rule by the Mandate of Heaven, and taught that a ruler who lost it through cruelty or disaster could rightly be overthrown.
In 221 BC the king of Qin conquered the Warring States and made himself the first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. He set one standard for coins, weights and the written script, joined older walls into a first Great Wall, and was buried with an army of about 8,000 clay soldiers, found by farmers digging a well near Xian in 1974. Under the Han, around AD 105, an official named Cai Lun presented the emperor with paper made from bark, rags and old fishing nets.
