This ancient civilizations word search covers the first cities and the people who built them: Sumer, Egypt, the Indus valley, the Olmec, Phoenicia and Carthage, with the ideas that made a city work, from irrigation to the alphabet.

Historians use a short checklist for a civilization: cities, a government, organized religion, social classes, specialized jobs, a system of writing, and public works such as walls and canals. All of it rests on a farm surplus. Once farmers grew more food than they ate, some people could stop farming and become an artisan, a merchant, a priest or a scribe. The first civilizations grew up along rivers: the Tigris and Euphrates, the Nile, the Indus and the Yellow River.

The Phoenicians, sea traders from cities such as Tyre and Byblos, used an alphabet of 22 letters, all consonants, by about 1050 BC. The Greeks borrowed it and added vowels, and the Romans built theirs from the Greek one, so the letters in this puzzle descend from it. Across the ocean, the Olmec of Mexico's Gulf Coast carved colossal stone heads around 1200 BC, some taller than a grown man.
