The myths begin with Gaia, the earth, and Uranus, the sky, whose children were the Titans. The Titan Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to people, and Zeus punished him by chaining him to a rock where an eagle ate his liver every day. Zeus punished people too. He sent Pandora with a jar, not a box in the oldest telling, and when she opened it every trouble in the world flew out, leaving only hope inside.
Many myths left words behind. Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection, which gave us narcissism, and the nymph Echo, who could only repeat what others said, faded away until nothing was left but her voice. A nemesis is a deadly rival, named for Nemesis, the goddess of payback, and Achilles gave his name to the tendon above the heel, the one place he could be wounded.
