Map Skills Word Search
This map skills word search holds forty words a student needs to read a map: the compass rose, the legend and its key, the scale, latitude and longitude, the equator and the prime meridian, and the four cardinal directions.
Lines of latitude run east and west and measure how far a place is from the equator, from 0 degrees there to 90 at each pole. They are also called parallels, because they never meet, and one degree of latitude is about 69 miles. Lines of longitude run from pole to pole and meet at both ends. Their starting line, the prime meridian, was fixed at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England, by a conference of 25 nations in Washington in 1884.
Every flat map stretches the round Earth somewhere. Gerardus Mercator drew his famous projection in 1569 for sailors, because a straight line on it holds a single compass bearing. The price is size near the poles: Greenland looks about as big as Africa, though Africa is roughly fourteen times larger. A globe keeps sizes and shapes true, and the scale bar on a flat map tells you how many miles each inch stands for.
