Latin Word Search
First-year Latin vocabulary: salve and vale, puella and puer, mater and pater, the agricola and the nauta, aqua and terra, rex and regina, Roma with its forum, and carpe diem.
Latin nouns of the first declension end in -a and are nearly all feminine, like puella, aqua and stella. The famous exceptions are men's jobs: agricola, farmer, and nauta, sailor, are masculine, and nearly every beginning textbook meets them in its first chapters. Salve says hello to one person and vale says goodbye; to a group they become salvete and valete.
More than half of English words come from Latin, directly or through French. Mater and pater give maternal and paternal, aqua gives aquarium, sol and luna give solar and lunar, and rex is the king in Tyrannosaurus rex. Harvard's motto is veritas, truth, and carpe diem, seize the day, comes from a poem Horace wrote around 23 BC.
