German capitalizes every noun, not only names, so Hund, Buch and Strasse start with a capital wherever they stand in a sentence. The letter Eszett is written SS in this grid, as in Strasse and Fussball, because for most of its history it had no capital form; one was added to the official rules only in 2017. The umlaut dots began as a small e written over the vowel, which is why Mueller is the same name with its dots spelled out.
Mädchen, girl, takes the neuter article das, because every noun ending in -chen is a small thing and neuter, whatever it names. German is the most widely spoken first language in the European Union, with close to 100 million native speakers across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg, and it gave English kindergarten, a word Friedrich Froebel coined in 1840 for his school for small children.
