Italian marks a stressed last vowel with an accent, so città, caffè, perché and lunedì keep theirs in the grid. Double consonants matter just as much: nonno is a grandfather and nono means ninth, and penna is a pen while pena means pain. Ciao comes from the Venetian word for slave, used to mean I am your servant, a polite greeting that shortened over time and spread across Italy and then the world.
Standard Italian grew from the speech of Florence, the language Dante used for the Divine Comedy in the early 1300s. When Italy was unified in 1861 most people spoke their local dialect, and one well-known estimate puts those who used standard Italian at under three percent. Schools, the army, radio and television spread it across the country over the next hundred years.
