Many French accents record a letter that dropped out. The circumflex in fenêtre stands for an s the word used to have: Old French wrote fenestre, and English kept that s in defenestrate, to throw out of a window. École was escole in Old French, a cousin of the English school. The cedilla under the c of garçon tells you to say it as an s before the a.
