Chinese Word Search
Mandarin Chinese words in pinyin, the Latin spelling taught in Chinese class: nihao and xiexie, laoshi and xuesheng, baba and mama, jiaozi and kuaizi, the xiongmao and the long, and the city of Beijing. Tone marks are left off, as in most printed puzzles.
Mandarin is a tonal language: the same syllable said with a level, rising, dipping or falling pitch makes four different words. Ma can mean mother, as in mama, or hemp, horse or scold, which is why pinyin normally carries a mark over the vowel. China adopted pinyin in 1958 to help people learn the characters, the hanzi, and a reader needs about three thousand of them to get through a newspaper.
Many words are built from smaller ones. A panda is xiongmao, bear cat, and China is Zhongguo, the middle kingdom. Putonghua, common speech, is the name for standard Mandarin, which has more native speakers than any other language, over 900 million. At Chunjie, the Spring Festival, children receive hongbao, red envelopes of money, because red is the color of luck.
