Japanese Word Search

Japanese words in romaji, the Latin spelling: konnichiwa, arigato and sayonara, sensei and tomodachi, the neko and the inu, sakura, kimono and origami, and the scripts hiragana and kanji. Long vowel marks are left off.

Japanese mixes three scripts in a single sentence. Hiragana and katakana each have 46 basic characters, one for each syllable; katakana spells words borrowed from other languages, and kanji are characters adopted from Chinese, with 2,136 on the official list for everyday use. Children learn hiragana first, and many picture books use nothing else.

English has borrowed many of the words here. Karaoke joins kara, empty, to oke, short for orchestra. The Shinkansen, the bullet train, opened between Tokyo and Osaka in 1964, just before the Tokyo Olympics. A daruma doll comes with blank white eyes: you paint in one when you set a goal and the other when you reach it.
