Kwanzaa Word Search

Forty words for the seven days of Kwanzaa, from December 26 to January 1: the kinara and its seven candles, the mishumaa saba, the mkeka mat they stand on, the unity cup called the kikombe, an ear of corn, muhindi, for each child in the family, and the karamu feast near the end of the week.

Maulana Karenga, later a professor of Africana studies, created Kwanzaa in 1966 as a celebration of African American family, community and culture. Its name comes from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, first fruits, after the harvest festivals held across Africa, and the words used during the week are Swahili too.

Each day is given to one of seven principles: Umoja, unity; Kujichagulia, self-determination; Ujima, collective work and responsibility; Ujamaa, cooperative economics; Nia, purpose; Kuumba, creativity; and Imani, faith. One candle is lit each evening, the black one in the center first, then the red and green candles on either side in turn, and the gifts, the zawadi, are often handmade.
