In Spain and Latin America, Dia de Reyes is the morning for presents. Children leave their shoes out the night before, with hay or grass for the kings' camels, and the family shares a rosca, a ring-shaped sweet bread with a tiny figurine of the baby Jesus baked inside. Whoever finds it hosts a party with tamales on February 2. In New Orleans the king cake season runs from Epiphany to Mardi Gras, and in France the galette des rois hides a bean or a charm.

Orthodox churches keep the day as the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan and bless water; in Greece a priest throws a cross into the sea and swimmers race to bring it back. In parts of Europe the doorframe is marked in chalk with the year and the letters C, M and B, for a Latin blessing on the house. The evening before is Twelfth Night, the end of the twelve days of Christmas.
