Las Posadas Word Search

Forty words for the nine nights before Christmas, from December 16 to 24: a procession of neighbors with candles retelling how Mary and Joseph looked for lodging in Bethlehem, the innkeeper who turns them away, and the party when one house finally lets them in, with ponche, tamales and a pinata.

Each evening the pilgrims, often children in costumes as Mary, Joseph, an angel and shepherds, sometimes with a real donkey, walk to a chosen house, knock at the door and sing a verse asking for shelter. The family inside sings back, refusing, until the last verse, when the doors open with a welcome. The singing and the prayer of the novena go together, and the villancicos are the Spanish carols of the season.

The custom took shape in colonial Mexico in the late 1500s, when friars used the nine evenings to teach the Nativity story, and it is kept today in Guatemala, across Latin America and in many US towns. The traditional pinata is a star with seven points, filled with candy and fruit. Paper lanterns called farolitos or luminarias line the paths in New Mexico, and the warm drinks are ponche, a fruit punch, and champurrado, a chocolate atole.
