Hanukkah Word Search
Forty words for the Festival of Lights: the menorah and its candles, the shamash that lights the others, the dreidel and its four letters, chocolate gelt, and latkes fried in oil and served with applesauce or sour cream.
Hanukkah begins on the 25th of Kislev of the Hebrew calendar, in November or December, and lasts eight nights. It remembers the Maccabees, a Jewish army led by Judah Maccabee, who took back the Temple in Jerusalem from the Seleucid king Antiochus IV around 164 BCE and held its rededication. The Talmud tells that the pure oil found there was enough for one day but burned for eight, hence the fried foods, from latkes to the jelly doughnuts called sufganiyot.
The four letters on a dreidel, nun, gimel, hey and shin, begin the Hebrew words of the sentence "a great miracle happened there". In Israel the last letter is pe instead, for "a great miracle happened here". Each letter tells the spinner what to do with the pot: take nothing, take it all, take half, or put one in.
