Korean Word Search
Korean words spelled in Latin letters: annyeonghaseyo and gamsahamnida, eomma and appa, kimchi, bibimbap and tteokbokki, the hanbok worn at Chuseok, and Hangeul, the alphabet King Sejong gave his people.
King Sejong announced Hangeul in 1446 so that ordinary people, not only scholars trained in Chinese characters, could read and write. It has 24 basic letters, and the consonants are drawn after the shape the mouth, tongue and throat make when saying them. Letters stack into square syllable blocks, and South Korea marks the alphabet's birthday as a holiday every October 9.
Korean family words depend on who is speaking. A younger girl calls an older brother oppa and an older sister eonni, while a younger boy says hyeong and nuna for the same two people. The spellings here follow the Revised Romanization that South Korea adopted in 2000, the system on its road signs, apart from words like kimchi and taekwondo that English already knew.
