Hebrew Word Search
Hebrew words in Latin letters: shalom, toda and bevakasha, boker tov and laila tov, ima, aba and savta, Shabbat and mazal tov, and the first letters of the alphabet, alef, bet and gimel.
Hebrew is the only language brought back as an everyday mother tongue after centuries in which it lived mainly in prayer and study. Eliezer Ben-Yehuda moved to Jerusalem in 1881, spoke only Hebrew at home and coined words for things the old texts never named. Today about nine million people speak it, and new immigrants to Israel learn it in an ulpan, an intensive Hebrew school.
Hebrew is written right to left in 22 letters, all of them consonants; vowels appear as small dots and dashes, mostly in children's books and prayer books. Alef, bet, gimel and dalet come from the same old alphabet as the Greek alpha, beta, gamma and delta. Shalom means peace as well as hello and goodbye, and chai, life, has the number value 18, so gifts are often given in multiples of 18.
