End of School Year Word Search
This end of school year puzzle holds the last week of class: the last day, the yearbook and its autograph pages, the report card, the awards assembly, the time capsule and talent show, and summer vacation after the final bell.
The long summer break did not come from farm work. Rural schools in the 1800s often held classes in summer and winter and let children out in spring and fall, when planting and harvest needed every hand. City schools ran nearly all year until reformers in the late 1800s pushed for a shared calendar with a summer break, partly because classrooms were too hot and many families left town in July and August.
Many schools end the year with a graduation or promotion ceremony, even for kindergarten and fifth grade. In high school and college the class valedictorian gives the closing speech, and the title comes from the Latin vale dicere, to say farewell. The student who gives the opening address is the salutatorian, from the Latin word for a greeting.
