Women's History Month Word Search
This Women's History Month word search has forty words for March: the suffragist and the Nineteenth Amendment, Seneca Falls, Stanton and Mott, Alice Paul, Earhart, Curie, Sally Ride and Rankin, the first woman in Congress.
The month started small. In 1978 schools in Sonoma County, California, held a Women's History Week around March 8, International Women's Day. President Jimmy Carter declared a national week in 1980, and after historians and teachers petitioned for more, Congress made all of March Women's History Month in 1987.
Much of the list goes back to Seneca Falls, New York, where Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott led a convention in July 1848 that demanded the vote for women. It took 72 more years to win the Nineteenth Amendment, ratified in August 1920. Jeannette Rankin of Montana was elected to Congress in 1916, before that amendment passed, and Frances Perkins became the first woman in a president's cabinet in 1933.
