Pi Day Word Search

This Pi Day word search has forty words for March 14: the circle and its diameter, radius and circumference, the irrational number that never repeats, Archimedes and Euler, the Exploratorium where the day began, and a slice of pie.

Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, about 3.14159, the same for every circle of any size. Its digits go on forever without settling into a pattern. More than 2,200 years ago Archimedes trapped it by drawing polygons with 96 sides inside and outside a circle, which showed that pi lies between 3.1408 and 3.1429. The Welsh mathematician William Jones first used the Greek letter for it in 1706, and Leonhard Euler made the symbol standard.

The physicist Larry Shaw held the first Pi Day at the Exploratorium, the science museum in San Francisco, in 1988, picking March 14 because the date is written 3/14. Staff marched around a circle and ate fruit pies. Albert Einstein was born on the same date in 1879, and in 2009 the House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing National Pi Day.
