National Poetry Month Word Search

This National Poetry Month word search has forty words for April: the sonnet, haiku and limerick, simile, metaphor and alliteration, the laureate, and poets such as Whitman, Longfellow, Silverstein and Gorman.

The Academy of American Poets started the month in April 1996, taking the idea from Black History Month and Women's History Month. One of its best-loved days is Poem in Your Pocket Day, when people carry a printed poem and hand it to friends or read it aloud. The Library of Congress names a Poet Laureate, the nation's official poet, for a term that usually runs a year or two.

Walt Whitman paid to print the first edition of Leaves of Grass himself in 1855 and kept adding to it for the rest of his life. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote Paul Revere's Ride in 1860, and its galloping rhythm did much to turn the midnight ride into a legend. Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends came out in 1974 and is still in print. At 22, Amanda Gorman read The Hill We Climb at the presidential inauguration in January 2021, the youngest poet ever to read at one.
