April Fools' Day Word Search
This April Fools' Day word search has forty words for the first of April: the prankster and the hoax, a whoopee cushion, a rubber chicken, googly eyes, the French paper fish, the Scottish gowk, and the spaghetti that grew on trees for one night in 1957.
No one knows for certain where the day began. A French poem from 1508 mentions a poisson d'avril, an April fish, and French children still tape a paper fish to a friend's back and shout it when the friend finds out. In Scotland the day was called Hunt the Gowk: a gowk is a cuckoo, and the fool was sent from house to house carrying a note that told each reader to send him on again.
In Britain the old rule says pranks stop at noon, and anyone who plays one after that is the fool. The most famous hoax on television ran on April 1, 1957, when the BBC program Panorama showed a Swiss family picking spaghetti from trees. Viewers called the BBC afterward, and some asked how they could grow a spaghetti tree of their own.
