Arabic Word Search
Arabic words in Latin letters: marhaba and shukran, umm and ukht, the kitab and the qalam, qahwa and shai, the qamar and the shams, the jamal in the sahra, and the first letter, alif.
Arabic is written right to left in 28 letters, and most letters join the next one, so each takes a different shape at the start, middle or end of a word. Short vowels usually go unwritten. More than 400 million people speak Arabic, and the same Modern Standard Arabic, fusha, is used for news and books across more than 20 countries, while everyday speech changes from Morocco to Iraq.
English took many words from Arabic. Coffee comes from qahwa by way of Turkish, and sugar from sukkar. Algebra is named for al-jabr in the title of a book by al-Khwarizmi, written in Baghdad in the 800s, and his own name gave us the word algorithm. Sahra means desert, so the Sahara Desert is the desert desert.
