Texas History Word Search
This Texas History word search covers the state's story from Spanish missions to oil wells: the Alamo and Goliad, Santa Anna and Sam Houston, the Lone Star republic, the Tejanos, the vaquero and the longhorn, and the Spindletop gusher.
Texas was part of Mexico when Stephen F. Austin brought the first American settlers there in the 1820s as an empresario. Fighting broke out at Gonzales in October 1835, and on March 6, 1836, Mexican troops under Santa Anna overran the Alamo, killing defenders including William Travis, Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett. Tejanos such as Juan Seguin fought on the Texan side.
Sam Houston's army beat Santa Anna at San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, in a battle that lasted about eighteen minutes, and Texas was an independent republic for nearly ten years before it joined the Union in 1845. On June 19, 1865, Union troops at Galveston announced that enslaved Texans were free, the origin of Juneteenth. In 1901 the Spindletop well near Beaumont blew oil more than 100 feet into the air.
