US Regions Word Search
Forty words for the regions of the United States: the Northeast, the Midwest, the Southwest and New England, the Great Plains and the Rockies, the Sun Belt and the Rust Belt, and the country's land from the bayou to the tundra.
The US Census Bureau splits the country into four regions, Northeast, Midwest, South and West, and nine smaller divisions such as New England and the Pacific. The Midwest had the clumsy official name North Central until 1984. The old line between North and South comes from a survey: Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon marked the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland in the 1760s to settle a long quarrel between the two colonies.
Some regions are named for what grows there or what left. The Corn Belt of Iowa, Illinois and Indiana takes its name from the crop, and the Rust Belt from the steel and factory towns around the Great Lakes that shrank from the 1970s on. The political writer Kevin Phillips coined Sun Belt in 1969 for the warm southern states that were then gaining people fast.
