Washington DC Word Search
Forty Washington DC words: the Capitol and its dome, the White House, the Supreme Court, the Lincoln Memorial, the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall, the Potomac and the cherry blossom trees of the Tidal Basin.
Congress chose the site in 1790, carving a district from land given by Maryland and Virginia, and the government moved in from Philadelphia in 1800. The French engineer Pierre L'Enfant drew the plan of wide diagonal avenues, and Benjamin Banneker, a free Black astronomer, helped survey the boundary. People living in the District could not vote for president until the Twenty-third Amendment of 1961.
The Washington Monument has two shades of marble. Work stopped in 1854 when the money ran out, the Civil War followed, and when building started again in 1879 the new stone came from a different quarry, so a line shows about 150 feet up the obelisk. The cherry trees were a gift from the mayor of Tokyo in 1912.
