Hawaii Word Search
Forty Hawaii words: the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island, the volcano Kilauea, the lei, the luau and the hula, the ukulele, and Hawaiian words like aloha and mahalo.
Hawaii became the fiftieth state on August 21, 1959, but it was a kingdom first. Kamehameha I united the islands by 1810, and the monarchy lasted until 1893, when a group of American businessmen overthrew Queen Liliuokalani. Her home in Honolulu, Iolani Palace, is the only royal palace in the United States.
Every island was built by volcanoes rising from the sea floor, and the Big Island is still growing as eruptions on Kilauea add new lava to its shore. Measured from its base deep under the water, Mauna Kea is over 33,000 feet tall, more than Mount Everest. The Hawaiian alphabet is short: five vowels and eight consonants, counting the okina, a mark for a catch in the voice.
