Slavery and Abolition Word Search
This Slavery and Abolition word search covers American slavery and the movement that ended it: the Middle Passage, the plantation and the auction block, Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad, Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, John Brown and the Emancipation Proclamation.
The Underground Railroad was neither underground nor a railroad. It was a network of free Black people, Quakers and other allies who hid people escaping slavery and moved them north, using railroad words such as station and conductor. Harriet Tubman escaped from Maryland in 1849 and went back about thirteen times, guiding around seventy people to freedom; she later said she never lost a passenger.
Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery in 1838 and published his Narrative in 1845. William Lloyd Garrison began printing The Liberator in Boston in 1831, and Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's Cabin sold 300,000 copies in its first year after 1852. In 1857 the Supreme Court ruled in the Dred Scott case that Black Americans could not be citizens, and two years later John Brown raided the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
