Rome Word Search
Forty Rome words, old and new: the Colosseum and the Forum, the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel, the Trevi fountain and the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, the Tiber, a Vespa in traffic and a gelato on the piazza.
The Colosseum opened in AD 80 and held about 50,000 people for gladiator fights and animal hunts. The Pantheon, rebuilt under the emperor Hadrian around AD 126, still has the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built, 43 meters across with an open hole at the top that lets in rain. Rome grew on its seven hills, the Palatine, Capitoline and Aventine among them, and became the capital of a united Italy only in 1871.
Visitors throw about 3,000 euros a day into the Trevi fountain, finished in 1762, and the city collects the coins for charity. The Vatican, inside Rome, is the smallest country in the world, less than half a square kilometer with fewer than a thousand residents. The Appian Way, begun in 312 BC, still runs south past the catacombs, where early Christians buried their dead in tunnels cut from soft rock.
