Las Vegas means the meadows in Spanish, named for springs that watered the valley long before the city was founded at a railroad land auction on May 15, 1905. Nevada legalized gambling in 1931, the same year work began on Hoover Dam, which rose 726 feet across the Colorado River by 1936 and created Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States. Most of the Strip sits outside the city limits, in an unincorporated town called Paradise.
The famous Welcome sign was designed by Betty Willis in 1959, and the Rat Pack, with Sinatra at the center, filled the Sands in 1960 while filming Ocean's 11. Elvis played 636 sold-out shows at the International Hotel between 1969 and 1976. The city's old signs are kept at the Neon Museum, and the Bellagio fountains, opened in 1998, shoot water as high as 460 feet.
