Big Ben is the bell, not the clock tower. It weighs about 13.7 tons and first rang in 1859; the tower around it was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012. The Tube is the oldest underground railway in the world. Its first stretch, the Metropolitan Railway, opened in January 1863 with steam engines pulling the carriages, and the network now has 272 stations. Tower Bridge, finished in 1894, still lifts its two roadways for tall ships.
A black cab driver must pass the Knowledge, a test of about 25,000 streets within six miles of Charing Cross, which usually takes three or four years to learn. At the Tower of London the raven count never drops below six, because legend says the kingdom falls if they leave. The prime meridian, zero degrees of longitude, runs through Greenwich, fixed there by an international conference in 1884, and the Shard, at 310 meters, is the tallest building in the country.
