Chicago Word Search
Forty Chicago words: the Loop and the elevated train that circles it, Lake Michigan, a deep dish pizza, the Willis Tower, the Bean in Millennium Park, Wrigley Field, the Cubs, the Bulls and the Bears, and the Great Fire that cleared the way for all of it.
The fire started on the night of October 8, 1871, and burned for two days, destroying about three square miles of wooden buildings and leaving 100,000 people without homes. The city rebuilt in steel, and in 1885 the Home Insurance Building became the first skyscraper, ten stories tall on a steel frame. The Willis Tower, called the Sears Tower when it opened in 1973, was the tallest building in the world for 25 years at 1,451 feet.
Engineers reversed the Chicago River in 1900 so that it flowed away from the lake, which was the city's drinking water, and every St Patrick's Day it is dyed green for the weekend. Cloud Gate, the real name of the Bean, is a 110-ton sculpture by Anish Kapoor, polished so smoothly that the skyline bends across it. The elevated line opened in 1892, and the Riverwalk passes under one movable drawbridge after another, more of them than any other city in the world.
