Capital Cities Word Search
Forty capital cities of the world: Tokyo, Ottawa, Canberra, Nairobi, Lima, Cairo, Oslo, Madrid, Brasilia, Wellington and Reykjavik, from the biggest city on earth to the capitals at the far ends of the map.
Several capitals were built on purpose. Washington was laid out in the 1790s on land that was mostly farms. Canberra was chosen in 1908 because Sydney and Melbourne could not agree on which of them should rule, and Australia's parliament moved there in 1927. Brasilia was carved out of the interior in under four years and opened on April 21, 1960, with a street plan shaped like an airplane. Ottawa was picked by Queen Victoria in 1857 as a safe distance from the American border.
Tokyo's metropolitan area holds about 37 million people, more than any other. Wellington is the southernmost capital of any country and Reykjavik the northernmost. Nairobi has a national park, with lions and giraffes, inside the city limits. Mexico City stands on the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, founded in 1325 on an island in a lake, and the drained lakebed is why the modern city sinks a little every year.
