Pride is held in June because of the night of June 28, 1969, when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a bar in New York's Greenwich Village, and the crowd fought back over several nights. A year later, on June 28, 1970, people marched from Greenwich Village to Central Park to mark the anniversary, and smaller marches took place the same weekend in Los Angeles and Chicago.
Gilbert Baker sewed the first rainbow flag for the San Francisco parade in 1978, after Harvey Milk, a city supervisor, encouraged him. It had eight stripes, each with a meaning, from healing for orange to serenity for indigo and spirit for violet. Hot pink cloth was hard to find, so pink was dropped, and turquoise went soon after; six stripes became the common version. On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples could marry in every state.
